Yasunori Mitsuda

Posted by johnfn - November 24th, 2013

Oh my God...

Time's Scar Listen to this one first, then when your mind is blown, listen to the rest.

Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World

Secret of the Forest

Singing Mountain

New life goal: BECOME YASUNORI MITSUDA.

Seriously though. The other day I was listening to the soundtrack for Chrono Trigger (the first soundtrack he composed) and I was so astonished by how consistent and brilliant it was. I mean, I played Chrono Trigger when I was younger, and I remember being amazed by "Wind Scene" and "Battle with Magus" but man... now I think that almost everything on it is perfect. It's filled with amazing tracks that feel like they came from some alternate dimension.

The chords are really unique (Battle with Magus is iii-IV-iii-V - I mean, have you ever seen that before? It's like some demented take on I-IV-I-V and it works so well!), the technical aspects are interesting ("Sealed Door" switches between 5/4 and 3/4 almost imperceptibly), and the melodies... argh don't even get me started.

Such inspirational work.

Yasunori Mitsuda is up there among my favourites, along with Keiichi Okabe (the one who did the Nier soundtrack), Hisaishi Joe and Go Shiina. Recommended listening right there. : )

But yes -- on that subject, someone dreamed of just making her own versions of Chrono Trigger songs... and is now working alongside Yasunori Mitsuda. Don't forget Erutan, now -- she's the one.

Ooh I really like Joe Hisaishi, I need to listen to him more. I have never heard of Go Shiina though, anything I should listen to in particular?

I am totally jealous of Erutan now and if I can't be Yasunori Mitsuda I could settle for being her.

Dude how have you not heard of Yasunori Mitsuda before.

I've actually been listening to the Chrono Cross OST for ages, and if you would have asked me I'd have said that it was my favorite OST at the time. I had written off the Chrono Trigger OST as some lame lo-fi stuff until I listened to it a few days ago and my mind was blown. He was high in my books but this puts him top tier.

yasunori's really good...I'd say I prefer him over his mentor (Uematsu). even though I've only heard his music from the Chrono and Xenosaga series. In fact I bought the Xenosaga series because I knew Mitsuda's composed for the game, I was a little disappointed.

if you flat the sixth degree of a major scale(harmonic major) you can make the iii function as a dominant chord, that's more common.
