A great guide as always, with plenty of useful tips 'n' trix!
Might want to change this sentence though:

"This will have to weird feeling of panning it both left and right simultaneously."

Keep up the good work ;)

ty fixed!

This is a really great guide! Someday I'm going to make my drums too loud and blame you when it gets criticized.

-----"There's really only two things you can do. First, you can pan - put one thing left and one thing right. This can work, but it can also make people go insane if you have two melodies going at the same or something."

So I guess this is a perfect example of what not to do: http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/754719
haha, I think I might continue this track just to practice these tips.

I hope you make some more guides in the future :D

Yay! Very helpful advice, for both me and the members of my competition. I think I'll link people to this in many a review. ^^

Good reminders here. I read it a couple times through now. EQ'ing reverbs opened up possibilities in my mind as I haven't thought about doing so before.

mixing is easy if you staring into the monitor long enough

Oh this is you Grant, for some reason I thought I was reading something ChronoNomad wrote. I think I meant to click his profile LOL

anyway yeah very good advice! I've never removed my limiter on FL Studio, didn't realise that was something that I should do. I'll try it out. What pros and cons arise from doing so?

Also, total yes to panning/stereo width. I hear so many nice compositions but it's just all centred and is so unsatisfying. In FL Studio, Stereo Shaper is your friend. For those FL Studio users reading this, I recommend the presets 'Stereorize 3', 'Stereorize 2', 'Stereorize 1' and 'Delay', in that order, to get started. Like you said, I'm not sure there's ever an occasion where pads won't benefit from being stereo shaped.

oh wow yea defo get that limiter off right away. there's no con. its like mixing with earplugs vs mixing without earplugs. (unless you're clipping, but you should never be clipping)

also seriously chrononomad YOU MISTOOK ME FOR CHRONO

I have been summoned~!

The above comments made me chuckle, I must admit. That aside, I do want to say that your post has a lot of really great tips, especially for those who are just getting started. I wish that we could get all the fantastic "How To" news posts and such together into one big comprehensive database where it would be easy to find and has some kind of handy search capability.

I have never not enjoyed your thoughts on reverb, and that happened to be one of my biggest issues when I was just getting started out. Like so many things, less is more, and having too much will always result in a muddy mix.

Everything in this post is helpful, and I can't fault your logic on any points. Even if some folks feel that having elements of muddiness, clipping, or other typically unintentional artifacts can be a positive thing. It's that whole subjectivity issue, all over again. C'est la vie.

Still, I can't help but LOL over the whole mistaken identity thing... xD

You nailed it on all accounts!

You should do one of these posts on mastering (my weakness). I'm sure it would be as insightful as this post!

Helping everyone as usual, you're the best!

tbh i know nothing about mastering. usually there's nothing on my master effects chain. sometimes i put a little compressor, but i dont think it makes much of a difference lol

I'm the remaining 10% weirdo who get them drums too loud.

Also you forgot splitting shit into mono. I cannot stress how much importance your drums and sub bass need to be in mono AND basses(except electro and dubstep basses).

I haven't exactly used fl for about 3 months, but I vaguely remember turning the separation knob to the right.

Nice guide! Recently i'm working on balancing sound frequences, so this won't be the last time i'll check this post xd
